Knurl · iOS

Privacy Policy

Effective: August 2026

Overview

Knurl is designed with your privacy as a priority. We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information.

Data Collection

We do not collect any personal information. The app has no account system, no analytics SDKs, no third-party tracking, and does not send any data to any servers. Knurl works entirely offline and has no network capability at all.

Data Access

Knurl asks for two permissions, both used only for taking and reviewing photographs:

Data Storage

Photographs are written to your own photo library, into an album named Knurl, and stay on your device unless you move them yourself. Your camera settings are stored locally on the device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Third-Party Services

None. Knurl contains no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party SDKs of any kind.

Children's Privacy

Knurl collects no data from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

Any future changes will be published on this page with an updated effective date.

What Knurl does

Knurl captures true Bayer RAW .DNG files: the sensor's own data, with none of the computational photography that normally happens on the way. That makes files with all their latitude intact, meant to be developed in Photos, Lightroom or similar.

Why 12 MP, and why no zoom

Bayer RAW is 12 MP only, and it does not permit any zoom. The 48 MP path would require Apple ProRAW, which is demosaiced and partially processed and therefore not pure RAW, so Knurl does not offer it. Each lens is used at its own native focal length instead.

Why the preview looks different from the file

They have the same exposure but not the same development. The viewfinder shows Apple's finished, tone-mapped video, while a RAW file has no look baked into it at all: whichever app opens it applies its own interpretation. Judge exposure by the meter rather than by how bright the preview looks.

Why ISO does not start at 100

The lowest and highest positions on each dial are the sensor's genuine limits, which are rarely round numbers. Base ISO is a measured sensitivity at the sensor's minimum gain rather than a figure anyone chose. It is also the cleanest the sensor gets, which is why Knurl makes sure you can actually reach it.

Why exposure compensation is unavailable in M

In full manual both ISO and shutter are fixed, so there is nothing left for compensation to shift. Cameras grey it out for the same reason. In M the same scale becomes the meter, showing how far the scene sits from correct exposure.

Taking a photo without touching the screen

The volume buttons fire the shutter. You can also add the Knurl control to your Action Button, Lock Screen or Control Center to open the app quickly, or point a Shortcut at knurl://capture to open it and take a photograph in one press.
